Avard was born in 1898 in River Hebert, Nova Scotia, the son of Rufus Christie and Alice Avard. He was employed as a miner in 1921 when he married Elsie Viola Carmichael in Christ Church, Amherst, Nova Scotia. After Elsie/s death in childbirth in 1930, Avard was a widower and employed as a truckman in 1931 when he married Viola Malcolm in the Bishop's house in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
