Biography

John was born in 1827[1] in Stirlingshire, Sotland.[2]

He married Janet Gourlay in Logie, Stirlingshire on 15 November 1859.[3]

They had children:

  1. Isabella (1860)
  2. Ellen/Helen Campbell (1864-1942)
  3. Edith/Elizabeth Gourlay (1867-1957)
  4. James Robert Christie (1869-1904)
  5. John William (1871)
  6. Jessie Margaret Christie (1877-1971)
  7. Henry James Christie (1876-1962)

John, Janet and eldest daughter Isabella emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 on the Sir George Pollock landing at Bluff in January 1863.[4] Their second child was born on the voyage. Janet's sister Jane/Jean emigrated with them.

The family settled near Invercargill.

He passed away in 1920, aged 93 years,[5][6] and is buried in Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.[7]
