Note for researchers:
At some time around 1800 the names, German Flatts and Herkimer were reversed.
The German founders called what is now Herkimer, German Flatts. The state of New York, named it Herkimer, and south of the Mohawk River, named that location German Flatts.
As the saying goes, "You can't fight City Hall" or the State of New York, so the name change had to be accepted. Controversy exists as to whether Herkimer or German Flatts is the correct name for the location of births marriages and deaths. The date of change on the map could range between 1790 to about 1810.
Today, the villages of Ilion and Mohawk reside in the Town of German Flatts.
