Biography

Ruth Chronister is one of twins.
Ruth Chronister was a Pennsylvanian.

Ruth, twin daughter of Charles Sylvester Chronister and Dora Viola Deardorff, was born 29 June 1905 in Adams County, Pennsylvania.[1] She grew up in a farming family that, in 1910, lived in Huntington Township, Adams County in a household headed by her parents Charles S. (age 30, farmer) and Dora V. Chronister (30, mother of four, all living). Residing with them and Ruth (4) were her brothers Murray C. (6), Ralph Harrison (4) and Charles Curtis (2)[2]

Perhaps because her father did not own the land he cultivated, the family moved frequently. Before 1920 they had relocated to Latimore Township, Adams County, where the household consisted of her parents Charles S. (age 40, tenant farmer) and Dorie V. (40), Ruth H. (14), and her brothers Murray (16), Ralph H. (14), Charley C. (12), Chester Herman (8) and Emory Clinton (2).[3] Her parents must have had a respect for education because none of the children appear to have been put to work, which is unusual for that time and place.[3]

Ruth H. (age 24) and her twin Ralph H. (24, trucker, freight transfer) continued to reside with their parents Charles S. Chronister (50, farmer) and Dora V. (52) in 1930 in Carroll Township, York County, Pennsylvania, together with their brothers Chester H. (20, farmhand) and Emery C. (13).[4] The tight-knit family remained together in 1940, but in Carroll Township, York County.[5] The household was comprised of Charles S. (age 59, farmhand) and Dora V. Chronister (59), the twins Ruth H. (35, house servant for private home) and Ralph R. (35, farmhand), their brothers Chester H. (28, farmhand) and Emory C. (22, painter for building contractor), and Emory's wife Pauline F. (Gerber) Chronister (21).[5]

Neither Ruth nor her twin appear to have married. Ralph died in 1960;[6] their parents Dora in 1945[7] and Charles in 1951.[8]

Ruth died 8 May 1993 at Seidle Skilled Care Center in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She had survived her twin by more than three decades, before being buried 13 May 1993 at Dillsburg Cemetery in Carroll Township, York County.[9]
