Biography

Captain Charles B. Church was the owner of a steam ship which he operated along the Mississippi River. [1] [2] [3] He was from Virginia. [4] [5] He later became a banker in Memphis, Tennessee. [6] Captain Church was also active in the Fraternity of Free Masons. In 1866 he was treasurer of his branch, Hamilton Lodge, No. 299, F. and A. M. [7]

Birth

Captain Church was born 15 May 1812, probably in Wheeling, West Virginia. [8] [9]

Death

Charles died 4 August 1879 in Blount Springs, Alabama. [10] Neither he nor his wife, Lizzie, were listed in the 1880 Memphis City Directory, but Lizzie is listed as the widow of C. B. in the 1881 city directory. [11] Captain Church was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. His plot is Chapel Hill #11. [12] Charles signed a will, dated 14 November 1876. [13] The will mentions his widow, Lizzie, by name, but does not mention any children by name. [14] This may have been by design to disguise the fact that at least one of his children was mulatto and not born to either of his wives.

Marriage

Charles married Mary Lee in Brown, Ohio on 3 December 1832. [15] Charles also married Lizzie Bugg on 14 June 1860 in Davidson, Tennessee. [16] Lizzie survived him and is mentioned in his will. [17] They probably had minor children because she was appointed guardian in the will. [18]

Children

It is not known if he was married to the mother of all of his children, at least one of which was of mixed race, or even if they had the same mother. Some names of some of his children are found on Find A Grave. [19]
