Biography

1776 Project
LT Levi Churchill served with 4th Connecticut Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Levi was born at Newington, Connecticut on May 28, 1752 and lived there for fifty years. He was the first generation of Churchill to leave Connecticut. Like his brothers he was a farmer and probably lived next door to his father. He attended Yale University.

Levi Churchill fought in the American Revolution with his father Charles, and brothers, Samuel, and Charles Jr. He served in the Tenth Company in the Sixth Connecticut Regiment, a division of the Colonial Continental Army.

He married his first wife, Elizabeth Hurlbut, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah {Wells} Hurlbut on October 30, 177 d. 1780. They had three children:

  • Elizabeth Churchill, b. 27 Jun 1773 in Newington. m. Leonard Hubbard, son of Timothy and Abigail Deming Hubbard.
  • Lydia Churchill, b. 14 July 1776 in Newington, m. Smithe
  • Noble Churchill, b. 11 Nov. 1779 m. Olive Stoddard.

He married his second wife after the death of the first, February 4, 1784. Levi married Ruth Merrill, the daughter of Elisha Merrill and Mary Fellows, in the First Congregation Church of New Hartford, Conn. They had nine children:

  • Charles Belden Churchill, born 5 March, 1785 and died 1878.
  • Calvin Churchill, (twin) born 14 Dec. 1786 in Wethersfield died 17 Feb. 1791, in Wethersfield.
  • Octavia Churchill, (twin) born 14 Dec. 1786 in Wethersfield, died 20 July 1820 in Bonneville, Oneida, NY.
  • Silas Churchill, born 9 Sept, 1790 in Wethersfield died 17 Feb. 1791 in Wethersfield.
  • Carolus Churchill, born 24 April 1791 in Newington. He married Polly Rowland 13 Mar 1812 in New Berlin, N.Y. Carolus died in Galesburg, Knox, Illinois.
  • Benjamin Churchill born 3 May 1792 in Wethersfield died 23 Aug 1894 at the age of 102, in Galesburg, Knox, Ill and was buried in Hope Cemetery, Alexis, Warren, Ill.
  • Hannah Churchill, born about 1794 probably in Newington
  • Sophia Churchill, born about 1796 probably in Newington.
  • Mary Churchill, born about 1798

In 1802 after the death of Levi’s father, Captain Charles, they moved from Newington to Oneida County, New York. In 1805 this was called Boonville. There were undoubtedly many events and circumstances which influenced Levi to move. New York.

The 1814 U. S. census for Oneida County list Levi as owning 200 acres near Boonville, New York with a value of $1452. It also shows that his son Charles Belden owned 20 acres valued at $132.00 his son Silas and son-in-law Josiah also owned 20 acres each valued at $192.00 The 1830 census does not include Levi nor Josiah but does list Charles Belden, Silas Carolus and Benjamin. It is believed that he and Ruth went back to Wethersfield, Conn and they both are buried there.

The Churchill Book gives his date of death as Feb. 12, 1836 and Ruth died after 1807. The Tillotson's book on gravestones [1]inscriptions confirms the dates.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Levi by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Levi:

Hi Betsey: I have re-added Elizabeth Hurlbut as spouse. It was only the marriage date that was incorrect. Also added 3rd child, in text, with Elizabeth, Noble Churchill... The source is Churchill Family in America by Gardner Asaph Churchill.
