Biography

THIS PROFILE IS A CONFLATION AND BOTH WIVES ALIVE AT THE SAME CHILDREN. PROBABLY AT LEAST 2 MAYBE 3 PEOPLE.

NOTE: While I am fairly certain that George Clack and George William Clack (who married Sarah Holliday) are the same person, there is a possibility that this profile conflates two people. This doubt is based on the death registered for a George Clack in Witney, Oxfordshire in the January quarter, 1887[1]. Another point of query would be that George W Clack, who died on 18 May1924 [2] had some assets valued at over 291 pounds, somewhat unlikely for a labourer.

Clack George William of 42 Clegram-road, Gloucester died 18 May 1924 Probate London 29 May to Bernard William Widdows iron turner. Effects (pound sign) 6s. 9d. [3]

The marriage to Sarah Jane Holiday has a William Wells as George William's Grandfather. George William is most likely a different person.

George was baptised in Bampton, Oxfordshire on 8 December 1844. His mother, Hannah was listed at "spinster" and no father was named.[4][5]

At least part of his childhood was spent living with his mother and brother in the home of his grandfather, Henry Clack in West Weald, Oxfordshire.[6]

At age 16, George lived with his mother and her husband Robert Wright, and his younger brother Jesse. Like the older family members, he was already working as an agricultural labourer.[7]

He married Sarah Jane Holliday in Lydiard Tregoze on 12 May 1866. His name is recorded as George William, and his father is given as William Wells, a labourer. It is unclear whether this is his biological father.[8] Sarah Jane died in 1894 age 47.[9] By 1871, George (a factory labourer) and Sarah (who worked in the fields) were living in Coped Hall, Tregoze with their two young children Henry and Mary Ann. [10]Daughters Amelia and Miriam had joined the family by 1881, when the family lived at "the Village", Cranham. George was a labourer, but Sarah was no longer listed as working.[11] The 1891 census reflects 46 year old George working as a Herdsman and living with his family in Painswick Rd, St. Leonard. His son Henry was a sack porter, with youngest children Lizzie and James at school. Also in the home are five year old Mable Poole, who is indicated as "niece" - presumably the child of a sibling of Sarah Jane.[12]

This may or may not be a different person:

In 1895 George William married Ann Elizabeth Clifford.[13]

The 1901 Census reflects George William Clack (54) living with Ann Elizat (51) in Clegham Road, South Hamlet, Gloucester, George William is a Carter [illegible word Carm??]. He has a son, James George who was a Spoke Wheel Bender. The census shows George William as born in Brampton and his son as being born in Cranham.[14]

In 1911 he again appears as a herdsman, still in 42 Clegram Street. His son " J" is a blacksmith for a wagon maker.[15]
