Biography

Pieter Claesen Wyckoff (ca. 1620 – June 30, 1694) was a prominent early figure in Kings County, Long Island, New York. He superintended the bowery (farm) and cattle of Peter Stuyvesant in New Amersfoort (present day Flatlands, Brooklyn). Pieter Claesen prospered there and acquired land and became a local justice of the peace, and was influential in establishing the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church at the juncture of Flatbush Avenue and Kings Highway in Brooklyn, where he and his wife Grietje are thought to be buried. [1]
Pieter Claesen was born in the village of Norden in the Holy Roman Empire (present day East Friesland, Germany). Pieter emigrated to America in 1637, as an indentured servant to Kiliaen van Rensselaer, in Rensselearwyck (now Albany, New York). After Claesen worked off his indenture, he labored as a tenant farmer, leasing land from the Rensselaer patroonship.
He married Grietje Van Ness (c. 1625-c. 1701) around 1645. Their first two children were born in Rensselearwyck but he moved to New Amersfoort (present day Flatlands, Brooklyn). His children included:
  1. Claes (Nicholas) Pieterse Wyckoff (1646-1714) m. Sara Monfoort (1656-1704)

  4. Mayken Pieterse Wyckoff (1653-1721) m. Willem Willemsen (c. 1637- c. 1722), son of Willem Gerritsen and Mary -----
  5. Willemptje Pieterse Wyckoff (c. 1654- c. 1693) m. Adrian Pieterse Kenne
  6. Cornelius Pieterse Wyckoff (c. 1656-1746) m. Gertje Charity Van Arsedalen
  7. Hendrick Pieterse Wyckoff (c. 1658-?)
  8. Geertje Pieterse Wyckoff (c. 1660-c. 1711) m. Christoffel Janse Romeyn (c. 1641- c. 1748)

Pieter and Grietje raised eleven children: six sons and five daughters. All of the children grew to adulthood, married and had famililes. The Wyckoffs were a very prominent family and all of their children married into families of importance in the area.

Summary Court minutes

Pieter Wyckoff and his father-in-law Cornelis Van Nes and his mother-in-law Mayken Hendricks van den Burchgraeff are cited in court minutes off and on from 1648-1650. Basicallly Pieter and his in-laws accused the new director of the colony of Rennselaerswyck with cheating Pieter. Evidently, even if these things are true, you may basically be sued for slander for stating this in public. The following are summarized court minutes taken from The Washington Ancestry pg 104, 188-191.
Summary of Court Minutes of Rensselaerwyck : 1648-1650, Rennsselaerswyck, New York [21]
14 Sept 1648 Van Nes stated the Director was a cheat & Pieter reported that the Director was no Christian. These events occurred at a public leasing in front of Rev Domine Megapolensis & bystanders. After speaking their piece Pieter and Van Nes walked out while the meeting was in progress and other people also walked out without leasing their properties at the rate the director was proposing. [21]
16 Sept 1648 The wife of Cornelis is charged for slandering Councilor de Vos saying if he had a seat in government he would make them suffer for the insults which they had offered to him. They demand she appear before the council and acknowledge she said too much & that she is heartily sorry, and pay a fine of 6 gilders. There is no record of her ever appearing which seems to indicate that she gave no apology. [21]
8 Oct 1648: Pieter Claesz sued by Brant Aertsz van Slichtenhorst, the Honorable Director of the Colony of Rensselaerswyck. Defaulted. fined. [21]
22 Oct 1648 Pieter Claesz cited by Hans Vos to fulfil his contract of service. Summoned. [21]
22 Oct 1648 Pieter Claesz claims unjust treatment by the Director. [21]
22 Oct 1648 Pieter Claesz charged by the Director with the same offense as his father-in-law Cornelis Hendriecksz who called the Director a cheat. [21]
26 Nov 1648 Cornelis is charged with "out of spite threshed out a quantity of oat straw, which is in winter best fodder, and thrown the straw on the manure pile." Demands Cornelis pay a fine of 25 guilders and make good the loss of straw. Cornelis had refused do do this on Nov 18th so on Nov 19th the Director attached the person of Van Nes and all his property, forbidding him to leave the colony: that he should vacate the house and barn next New Year & shortly render to the director a specified account of everything, including the trade, for each year separately. [21]
17 Dec 1648 Cornelis repeates his charges against the director.17 Dec 1648 Pieter & Cornelis regret using vehement language against the Honorable Director. [21]
21 Jan 1649 Van Nes: Judgement of florins 150 with interest, also florins 36:15, 2 skins with costs, Judgement on account of the oat straw-with cost-to give security for both. Sentence on account of slander by the wife of Van Nes. Pieter offers himself to be imprisoned as surety for his father-in-law, to satisy all judgements in actions which the Honorable Director may bring against Van Ness, in toto. [21]
28 Jan 1649 The 235 guilders due Pieter from Jan Derricksz attached by the Director as security for the delivery by Pieter of the patroon's horse and the house in as good condition as he received them. [21]
29 Apr 1649 Living with his father-in-law: both summoned & their property attached & ordered to be watched over by Hans Vos to supervise over their property until they shall have rendered their accounts and performed their duties, all on payment of the proper wages to Han Vos. [21]
6 May 1649 Pieter promises to deliver up the house, barn and hay barracks used by him. [21]
17 May 1649 Pieter is assigned by the Director to pay Jan van Bremen florins 266:3 11. [21]
22 May 1649 Pieter is ordered to let Jan van Bremen have two of the strongest horses. [21]
22 May 1649 Pieter is released from bail bond executed for his father-in-law. [21]
5 June 1649 Pieter and his family left the colony of Rensselaerswyck. [21]
13 Jan 1650 Cornelis is summoned to appear on the 29th and is forbidden to tap. (Dispose of the beer he has brewed.) [21]
17 Feb 1650 Hans Vos is granted by the court 100 guilders for his supervision during the past year at the house of Cornelis and Pieter. [21]

Hi,

There was something added to the profile of his wife that perhaps can lead us to his parents ? It says she was married to Pieter Claesz from Amersfoort ..so not sure, but it's worth investigating of course ;)

Greets,

Bea

on the other hand...bummers..that probably would be New Amersfoort eeh

Hi Michael,

Changed it to 1 July 1620, the other date mentioned in the Bio and marked it as uncertain now.

Indeed no source, so looking at the date of immigration prob. 1637, and the fact he was an indentured servant, the 1620 year of Birth probably is more correct.

Thanks for noticing this ;)

Bea, should we change his birthdate to about 1620. I do not think we have an actual birthdate yet do we?

Hi Donna,

Yes I know, Boda is the place, it was said he was born from the disproven Ancestry. See also the profile of Claes Cornelis (van Schouwen) , he was born abt 1607 in Brouwershaven (at the former Island Schouwen, now Schouwen Duiveland), we found his marriage (1632) and the baptism of two of their children Trijntje (bapt. 1633) and Herpert (bapt. 1635) in Amsterdam, since they married in 1632 and because there were no baptisms of or a son named Pieter mentioned that was born before the marriage, it seems very unlikely Pieter Claesz born in 1625 was their son.

Claes Cornelis (van Schouwen) according the marriage record (we added it) was from Brouwershaven and born abt 1607. The supposed 'Boda' (van Goes and Petersson) parents passed away in 1596 (mother) and 1599 (father) so it's impossible these were his parents, also at his marriage it isn't mentioned Claes was married earlier to a wife named Margaret or Grietje van Goes, it was pretty common in Amsterdam that it was mentioned when someone was a widow or married before.

Anyway, we corrected things now, because the most important previous 'facts' were disproven...we added the records and everything we could find, see Claes Cornelis's profile or the Wyckoff free space page...

Hope it explains it a bit more and thanks for the help and interest of course , if you have or can find some evidence that proves otherwise it would be great :)

Hi,

I created a free space page and added all info from the scrollbox there now, maybe someone is interested or has some time to create a nice short Bio for our Pieter Claesz ?

And maybe someone is interested in making a nice free space page for the Wyckoffs ?

If so just let me know and I can add you to the trusted list or as manager of the page :)

You're welcome and ..found and added the marriage record for Claes Cornelis born Brouwershaven (Schouwen, Zeeland, Netherlands) , and Metje Herperts baptism record and her parents .

Looks like now he needs a disputed parents template as well ...

Hi ,

As requested now removed the connection to the supposed but unlikely correct father Claes Corneliss van Schouwen born Brouwershaven and married in Sloterdijck, because they had two children baptized in Amsterdam , but no Pieter .
