Biography

Thomas was born in 1866 in Spanish Point in County Clare, Ireland, one of a set of twins of James Clancy and Ellen Sexton. He grew up in Spanish Point where his father was initially keeping a hotel, but soon began farming. Thomas emigrated to America, probably in the mid to late 1880s. By 1905, he was living with several of his siblings in the Bronx in New York City, New York and working as a policeman. He married at some point before he died on Staten Island in New York City in 1914 at the age of 48.

Research notes

Two pieces of evidence support Thomas's emigration and death in New York City:

• 1905 NY census which has a group of Clancy siblings living together in the Bronx. These siblings match the names, sequence and general ages corresponding to County Clare birth and baptism records for this family. Thomas is reported to be working as a policeman at that time.
• 1914 death record from Staten Island that cites his parents James Clancy and Ellen Sexton, his occupation as a policeman, and his marital status as married.

The 1914 death record also cites his residences as 943 Van Duzer Street on Staten Island. In the 1910 census, there was a Thomas Clancy the same approximate age (born in 1867) living at 625 Van Duzer Street, married to Margaret McDonald with several children. Given the neighborhood match, It is tempting to conclude that this is the same Thomas Clancy, but there are critical inconsistencies that rule him out as a match:

• The Thomas married to Margaret is found still living in other census records in 1915, 1920 and 1925, after the death of our Thomas.
• The occupation of Thomas married to Margaret is consistently given as a carpenter, not as a policeman
• There is a record for carpenter Thomas married to Margaret with matching children in the 1905 NY census for Manhattan in New York City, while at the same time there is another record in the same 1905 NY census for our Thomas living with his siblings in the Bronx, working as a policeman and presumably not yet married.

Records for carpenter Thomas are given below so that you can evaluate these inconsistencies.

While we can rule out carpenter Thomas, candidate records linked to our Thomas for the 1900 and 1910 censuses and for his marriage have yet to be clearly identified.
