Biography

Bridget, usually called Delia, was born in 1876 in Spanish Point in County Clare, Ireland, the daughter of James Clancy and Ellen Sexton. She grew up in Spanish Point where his father had initially been keeping a hotel, but soon began farming. Delia emigrated to America in 1896 (tbc). She was living with several of her siblings in the Bronx in 1905 and working as a dressmaker. In her brother's probate documents in 1929, her address is given as her sister's in Lynbrook in Nassau County, New York and her name is given as Clancy, so she does not appear to have married.

Research notes

Evidence linking Mary to the Clancy family from County Clare relates mainly to (1) the explicit naming of her and her eight siblings in America in the probate documents after her brother John's death in 1929, and (2) her living with her siblings in the Bronx in 1905 (though the name is not clear). No other records could be clearly identified by her birthdate or other information, though there is one candidate for the 1910 Census of a Delia Clancy, dressmaker, living at 328 W 43rd Street.

There are several Bridget/Delia Clancy's recorded arriving in New York in the late 1880s and 1890s, but it is not possible to distinguish with reasonable certainty which might apply to our Delia. There does not appear to be a naturalization file.
