William was born in Blackawton, Devon and baptised there on 18 January 1746/7[1] He is the son of Abraham Clapp and Mary Webb.
William appears to have married Elizabeth Holman on 22 January 1768 at East Allington.[2] East Allington is just three miles to the west of Blackawton.
There is another William Clapp marriage, to Jane Langworthy on 29 June 1787 in Blackawton. No note is made of his bachelor/widower status on the marriage, only describing him as a husbandman.
An Elizabeth Clapp died in 1827 in Blackawton and could be William's wife, but not enough information is recorded in the burial register to be sure.
