Nicholas Clapp migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Directory, by R. C. Anderson, p. 65) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
Nicholas Clapp was born in about 1612. He was the son of Nicholas Clapp and Elizabeth (___).[1]
He emigrated from England to Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1636[2]
He married first, in about 1636 based on the date of their first known child, his first cousin Sarah Clapp, daughter of his uncle, William Clapp.[3][4]
He married second by 1667 Abigail (____). She was reportedly the widow of Robert Sharp of Brookline, and may have been related to a James Bird.[5][4]
Mary Lovering Holman reports that he married third, before 1672, Anna (___), widow of John Annibal.[6] However, Holman does not explain her source and more recent researchers appear to question this claim.[7]
Mr. Clapp was a man highly respected by his contemporaries; he held a number of the responsible offices of the town, and was a Deacon of the church. His name is found on the list of jurors at a special court held in September, 1653, relative to disputed matters connected with the Lynn Iron Works.[4]
Nicholas died "suddenly in his barn" in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on 24 November 1679.[8][9][4]
His estate was worth £358 04s 4p after payment of debts.[4]
Research Needed
Three secondary sources in the Great Migration Directory offer different accounts of Nicholas's later marriage{s). The current profile attachments follow the most recent, The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton (1996), which gives Nicholas's second wife (and mother of his last two children) as Abigatil ______, possibly a relative of James Bird. Mary Lovering Holman in Scott Genealogy (1919) reports second wife widow Abigail Sharp before 1667, and ber 1672 Anna, widow of John Anniball.[6] Walter Goodwin Davis in Ancestry of Joseph Neal (1945) gives Nicholas's second wife as widow Anna Anniball of Ipswich, marrying before 15 April 1667.[12] Wikitree shows Abigail (Wright) Sharp (1623-bef.1702) marrying a Thomas Clapp. Any of these claims need to be supported with original records.
Other family connections
He had four brothers: Ambrose and Richard, who remained in England; Thomas, b. 1597 and d. at Scituate on April 20, 1683; and John, who died in Dorchester on July 24, 1655.[13][14]

Clapp-2747 and Clapp-16 appear to represent the same person because: Clapp-2747 inadvertently created when adding father to Noah Clapp's profile. Clapp-2747 and -16 clearly the same
