He lived in that part of Dedham incorporated as the town of Walpole in 1724.
He was a farmer, and of his father's estate he had one half the field near the river, bounded north by the land of his brother Thomas; two lots of cedar swamp meadow; six acres of land next to James Fales's; twelve acres of land north of Neponset River, some of it on the river ; and two cow- rights.

Johnb. 1709 d. Feb. 21, 1775, aged 66 years. He probably never married. Being a person unable to manage his own affairs, his brother Joshua was appointed his guardian, June 13, 1745, John then being about 32 years of age.

Joshua died intestate. In the administration of his estate, it was determined that his real estate could not be divided and was granted to Joshua Clapp the eldest son, reserving a third for the widow Silence Clapp, to revert to Joshua upon her death. Joshua was to compensate his siblings for their shares, his siblings names as: Abigail Morse, Esther Morse, Mary Robins, John Clap, Thankful, Silence and Seth Clap. The division was dated 30 December 1729 and signed by Joshua Clap, Ezra Morse, and Samuel Bullard, witnessed by George Houstoun and John Boyden.[2]
