Biography

Lord of Baynard and Little Dunmow, and Steward to King Henry I.

Burial

Priory of St Neot, Cambridgeshire, England

Note

Robert, 5th son of Richard FitzGilbert, Earl of Clare (ancestor of the Earls of Hertford), was steward to Kings Henry I and Stephen.[1]

He was granted the Barony of Little Dunmow in Essex, and the honour of Baynard Castle, in the city of London, after William Baynard was disinherited of them in 1110.[2]

He married (1112) Maud, daughter of Simon de St. Liz, Earl of Huntingdon and Northmapton. She out-lived Robert and re-married to Saher de Quincy.[1] Robert and Maud had 1 son and 1 daughter:

  • Walter. Robert's heir, and the future FitzWalter family's first Walter.
  • Maud. Wife of William d'Aubeney and Richard de Lovetot.[1]

Robert fitzRichard died after 28 November 1137 and was buried at the Priory of St Neots, Cambridgeshire, England.[1]

Common errors

The FitzWalters of Daventry are not descended from Robert fitz Richard.

In general it should be noted that "fitz" simply means "son of" in the 12th century, and so un-related people could be described as "fitz Walter" etc.

PS.In NEw Orleans, the surname's spelling was changed to"Clair"probably because of the strong French influence here in Louisiana, friends.

Wasn’t the origin of the name Norman ( French) anyway?

The area existed long before the Normans invaded. The family that became known as 'de Clare' was 'de Brionne' before that. The Brionne family was indeed from France, but the 'Clare' name wasn't.
Correct,my dear friend.Mercu beaucoup,ma chere amie Darlene;and God bless you & kinldy keep you well & safe,my dear friend Darlene.

The name Clare, according to Cokayne comes from the town in Suffolk. Richard de Clare held land there (recorded in Domesday) in 1086.

The first Clare in my family to come to America was a Garret Clare,my paternal 2X Great-GRandfather.His last name was originally"Clear",but he changed it to"Clare".Probably because there was an English noble family by that name of Clare. So,he probably changed it to Clare, because it seemed more Prestigious than Clear,I imagine. He was born May 7th,1836 in Wexford,Ireland. His aprents were Mr.John Clear, formerly Cleary, born Nov .9,1800 in Limerick,Limerick,Ireland, and Miss Anty Morissy, born about 1820,also in Ireland.According to his 1868 Naturalization Record,Garret immigrated to the USA in 1851where he eventually settled in New Orleans,Louisiana. As far as I can tell,he apparently came by himself.his parents having presumedly died circa 1850 in Ireland. He passed in 1874 at the age of 38 in New Orleans,La.

The main Richardson entry in RA is Vol.2 p.644 under "Fitz Walter". It says he died 1137, after 28 November.

I note this profile cites a 19th century Burkes for information although it also cites Richardson. Does that mean it is not to be found there? If such notable information can not be confirmed from a better source it is normally better to delete it.
