Biography

Research Notes

His wife was possibly an aunt of Thomas á Becket. Also had younger son, Hubert Walter, Archbishop of Canterbury.

I've been undertaking some research and there seems to be no evidence that the Hervey who was the ancestor of the Butler family was himself a 'de Clare' or a descendant of the 'de Clare' family.

The Complete Peerage, 2nd ed. vol. 2, p. 447 has no mention of the Clare family.

Similarly the The Complete Peerage, vol 12(2) p. 246 also doesn't connect the Walter/Butler family to the de Clares.

Keats-Rohan Domesday Descendants, p. 398 doesn't mention a Hervey de Clare amongst the children of Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare, and Adelisa de Clermont.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in it's article about Theobald Walter (Butler) only mentions his father as Hervey Walter with again no mention of descending from the de Clare family.

The original Dictionary of National Biography article about Theobald Butler written by J. Horace Round has some discussion and mention of sources for the Walter/Butler family but again no hint that he was descended from the de Clare family.

This last source cites other sources including primary sources and they need to be researched, but it seems highly likely that this LNAB should be changed and the current parents disconnected.

I've adopted this profile on behalf of the Medieval Project, as there seems to be much doubt that this profile was from the de Clare family.

More research needs to take place.

Hervey de Clare DID NOT have a son Hervey Walter. The Walter family starts with Hervey who had a son Hervey who had Theobald Bulter.

1911 Encyclopædia Britannica https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/1911_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica/Butler

This is an excellent book that discounts Hervey de Clare & others as being ancestors of Theobald Bulter-

As Gilberta is probably not the daughter of Gilbert Becket, possibly his sister instead, I propose to detach her from the current parents.

Walter-217 and Walter-2665 do not represent the same person because: One is the father of the other.
Walter-2665 and Clare-681 appear to represent the same person because: same name, Unknown Becket, Gilberta alleged spouse, birth 1070-1095, all possible, same location, same time frame, http://www.thepeerage.com/p65589.htm#i655881
Walter-217 and Walter-2665 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same location, one too many Hervey Walter's, 1195 is closest to the probable birth date. same time frame,
Walter-2537 and Walter-2665 do not represent the same person because: Walter-2665 is the grandfather of Walter-2537

Walter-2537 and Walter-2665 appear to represent the same person because: These two look like father/son but they have the same wife.

De Houghton-16 and Clare-681 do not represent the same person because: I don't see any information that indicates these two men are one and the same. WHAT AM I MISSING?
