Biography

Jonas was a son of Theophilus Clark and his wife Martha, born in Canterbury, Connecticut, on September 9, 1741.[1]

Jonas Clark married Avis (a.k.a. Abias) Page of Groton, Connecticut, on October 17, 1763.[1] Their children, born in Canterbury, were:[2]

  1. Enos (twin with Theophilus), born July 5, 1764
  2. Theophilus (twin with Theophilus), born July 5, 1764
  3. Faunella, born August 17, 1767
  4. Rachel, born November 13, 1769
  5. Martha, born October 6 1772
  6. Jonas, Jr., born December 30 1774

Jonas Clark removed from Canterbury to Middletown (Rutland County), Vermont, in 1790. In Middletown, he was a member of the Baptist church and was clerk of the Baptist society at its organization in 1790. His sons Enos and Theopholus, twins, had removed to Middletown, Vermont, about two years before their father.[3]

The 1790 U.S. Census (enumerated in 1791) recorded Jonas Clark in Middletown with a household of five: two males age 16 and above and three females. Other Clarks recorded in Middletown were "Thephilus," Ezra, Elisha, Enos, Rufus, Roswell (all sons or nephews of Jonas) and David (not identifiable as a family member of Jonas).[4]

A list of freemen of Middletown in 1801 reproduced by Frisbie[5] includes the names Rufus Clark, Enos Clark, Theophilus Clark, Jonas Clark, Ezra Clark, and Roswell Clark (most, but not necessarily all, members of this man's family). Frisbie noted that Jonas Clark, Jr., and Elisha Clark were also residents of the town who were then over the age of 21.

Jonas Clark died in Middletown, Vermont, on 23 September 1813 at the reported age of seventy years.[6]

He is buried in Middletown Springs Cemetery, Middletown Springs, Rutland, Vermont. [7] Inscription:

In
memory of
JONAS CLARK SEN.
who died
Sept. 23, 1813
aged 70 years
& 3 days.

Research Notes

Frisbie (page 75) mentioned an "epidemic illness" in Middletown in 1813, and stated that Elisha Clark (a nephew of Jonas who died in January 1813) was one of its first victims. The relationship between Jonas' death and this epidemic illness has not been determined.
