Hardesty & CO.,Publishers, Chicago and Toledo. 1882, Bicentennial Edition, May 1976,Sponsored by the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Gallipolis, Ohio CONT   CONT Page XXII CONT Cholera Epidemic of 1849 CONT   CONT             As a matter of historical interest, it is proper to give an account of the terrible visitation of cholera which occurred in 1849. In the summer of that year,William Martt, of Walnut township, assisted in moving a family in Lawrence county, and returning home was taken sick early in July. He lingered in his illness for over a week, and his friends and neighbors kindly assisted in the care of him. It was not until it had spread to the families of all those who had beenexposed, that the disease was discovered to the cholera of the most malignant type.  The first victim to the dread disease was William Clark, who died after and illness of about four hours. The death of his wife and daughter quickly followed. The local physicians were inexperienced and unable to cope with the fearful epidemic which spread rapidly. CONT             To Mr. Middleswarth, a farmer of Clay township, is due the credit of checking and finally subduing the terrible scourge. Although unskilled in medicine, he had previously obtained a recipe for the cure of the cholera from a physician at New Orleans, and being a skillful nurse, he volunteered and did good service among the sick. CONT             At one time eight of Mr. Martt’s family including himself, were lying dead in the house and five of them were buried in on grave, as assistance could not be obtained to dig a sufficient number.  Owing to the inability to obtain coffins, many were buried without them. An excitement such as is seldom witnessed in any community for a time prevailed, and all who had been exposed expected to die. During the space of two weeks there were abut one hundred cases in Walnut and the adjoining township of Harrison, thirty-seven of which were fatal, and the agonizing anxiety for the safety of the lives of dear ones in the minds of the people of the little community can be better imagined than described. CONT             The epidemic was confined to a radius of about four miles. There is nothing in the locality that should have caused its appearance, on in the manner described, as it is exceedingly healthy, and nothing of the kind had ever occurred before or has been experienced since.

Presented to Eugene E. Clark as a Christmas Present in 1940. Text: William Clark was the second son of Lieut. Thomas Clark. He was born in Virginia in Montgomery County on Feb, 7, 1790. He married Elizabeth Nida in 1818. He was 28 and she 16. William appears to have been the most thrifty of the sons of Thomas Clark. Although but 59 when he died he was quite a land owner, as indicated by deeds at the time of his death, preserved by his son Jeptha, and now in possession of a Great Granddaughter, Mrs. Merna Stein of Springfield, Il. Some of these deeds are on parchment, and ar in a perfect state of preservation. The first deed is dated Oct. 13, 1817, and is for a tract of land situated in Giles, County, Virginia, for 170 acres, and is signed by James P. Preston, Gov of Virginia. He served in the War of 1812, with his brothers, Thomas and Isaac. When he came to Ohio I have been unable to ascertain, but he lived in a two-story log house, on Sand Fork, about one half mile north or Lecta, known as the John Notter Farm. CONT In July of 1849 he and a neighbor, by the name of Martt went to Wyandot to move a family into their neighborhood, he contracted the Asiatic Cholera and died July 11, 1849. His wife Elizabeth died two days later, July 13, 1849. He left a farm to each of his surviving sons. He now lies buried in a cemetary on the Bostick Farm. CONT They had 15 children. CONT Taken from Family History Book, put together by Faye Clark Collier as Christmas present to Eugene E. Clark in 1940.
