Biography

The following is taken from "History of Jefferson County, PA" by Kate M. Scott, 1888, and "Jefferson County, PA, Her Pioneers and People," by Dr. William J. McKnight, 1916, as posted on ancestry.com by breecamper, 2 May 2010.

Joel Clark was born in 1752 in Massachusetts, served in the Revolutionary War as a Soldier from Connecticut, then later married Chloe Reed. They raised a family of three sons and one daughter: Elihue, Joel Jr., Philetus, and Chloe. After first residing in Connecticut, where the children were born, they then moved to Russell, St. Lawrence County, NY, and finally came to Jefferson County about 1819. Joel Clark built the first saw-mill on Little Toby Creek, later adding a grist-mill; but lost both of them in a flood in 1847. Elihue married Elizabeth Ellinger; Joel Jr., married Mary Monahan; Philetus married Penelope Goddard; and Chloe married Milton Johnston. Joel died on 11/6/1844, and was buried in "the Shaffers burying ground", now called the Hafner Cemetery. Chloe died 2/25/1849 and was buried beside him. New tombstones were placed on their graves in Hafner Cemetery, but the old stones were moved to Wildwood Cemetery and can still be seen there.

Joel and his family are found on the census for East Granville, MA in 1800.[1]His brothers, Nathaniel, Samuel and Arunah appear the same record, as well as cousins, Ichabod and Lot.

He is likely the Joel Clark found on the 1810 census for Russell, NY.[2]

RESEARCH NOTE

Regarding Joel's place of birth, Joel was likely born in Lebanon, CT because his parents didn't move from Lebanon until after 1764, as documented on land records of his father. Nathaniel Clark was "of Lebanon" at the time he purchased land in Granville, MA from Samuel Rowles.[4]
