Biography

Silas was born in Lebanon, CT in 1724.[1] He was the son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Kellogg) Clark.[2]He was baptized in the Lebanon First Congregational Church 21 June 1724.[3]

When his father's estate was settled in 1758, Silas was willed 22 acres of land in Lebanon.[4]

...And we have divided & Set out to Silas the 3rd Son of ye deceasd 29 1/4 acres in Two pieces...

Silas married Keziah Culver[5] (1725 - 1763). The children of Keziah and Silas, all born in Lebanon, CT (their birth records can be found in the Lebanon VR):

  1. Hannah (1750 - bef. 1802) married Billie Williams; he married 2nd, her sister Keziah Clark.[6]
  2. Jacob (1752 - bef. 1802)[6]
  3. Lucy (1754 - bef. 1761)[6]
  4. Andrew (1755 - aft. 1802)[6]
  5. Keziah (1757 - aft. 1802) married Billie Williams, widower of Hannah Clark.[6]
  6. Nathan (1759 - 1840) died in Lebanon.

Silas married 2nd, Abigail White (1732 - 1784) in 1764.[7] According to Cyril B Clark, she was born in the Exeter, CT area.[8]

The children of Abigail and Silas, all born in Lebanon, CT (found in familysearch.org & Connecticut Births and Christenings).

  1. Abner (1765 - 1843) married Betsey Bill abt. 1784; served as a musician in the Battle of Long Island in 1776, moved to St. Lawrence, NY.[9]
  2. Silas (1766 - aft. 1802) married Sally King in 1806; settled in Westfield, MA.[7]
  3. Joshua (1767 - aft. 1802)[6]
  4. Frederick (1769 - aft. 1802)[6]
  5. Walter (1771 - 1860) married Eunice Wood abt. 1800; served as a Major in the War of 1812; they settled in Columbus, Chenango County, NY.[7]
  6. Abigail (1773 - aft. 1802) married --- Williams.[6]

The location of their farm in Lebanon can be seen on the map in Cyril B. Clark's book prior to the chapter on his father, Nathaniel Sr.[8]

Silas died in Lebanon, CT in 1809 at the age of 85.[10] He is buried in the Exeter Cemetery in Lebanon, CT.[11][12]

Excerpts from the Will of Silas Clark, 1802:[6]

I Silas Clark of Lebanon in the County of Windham & State of Connecticut this 17th day of March AD 1802 being more than Seventy seven years old but enjoying comfortable health & a Sound & disposing mind & memory.... Whereas I have already advanced to my seven sons Viz, Andrew, Nathan, Abner, Silas, Joshua, Frederick and Walter the Sum of One Hundred & Fifty pounds & [illegible] each & to Each of my three daughters Viz, Hannah, now desd the Wife of Billie Williams, Keziah now the wife of Williams, and Abigail the wife of [illegible] Williams, including notes by me already made out to be delivered to Abigail the Sum of Seventy five pounds....
