Barnabas was born in Middleborough, Massachusetts, about 1760.
Certain records on him have been difficult to come by. He is called Lt. Barnabas Clark in the birth records of his son Barnabas - perhaps he saw service in the Revolutionary War?
He married Judith Hoar, daughter of Robert and Judith Hoar, in 1784. Some records give the date as April 29[1], but a recording by Rev. Caleb Turner says he married them on March 29, 1784.[2]
They resided in Middleborough, but were living in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, by 1820.[3] He died there about 1822. His widow, Judith, declined to be appointed to administer her late husband’s estate, and their son Samuel S. Clark was appointed in her place on February 4, 1823 for the estate of Barnabas Clark, late of Fairhaven, Mass, yeoman.
From his inventory, which included eight blacksmith hammers, six blacksmith tongs, two anvils, two pairs of bellows and a grindstone, it is obvious he practiced the trade of a blacksmith, though probate records call him a yeoman.[4]
