Biography

William Clark was born in Carlisle, Northumberland in 1777.

There is an army service record for William (served in the army for 22 years from 1794 - 1816 including service in India). Prior to army service his occupation was as a weaver.

William married Mary Knowles who was 18 years his junior on 14th October 1816 at Newcastle. Mary was born in 1794 and died after 1871.

They had three sons and four daughters between 1821 and 1835. He died in September 1851 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, at the age of 74.

He is listed in the baptism of his son Robert Thomas Knowles Clark on 13th May 1827 at Newcastle Upon Tyne's St. John Church ^[1]

1841 Census ^[2] The Clark family are living at the Black Gate, close to Garth Castle. William is listed as age 65. With him are wife Mary aged 45 (dress maker), Mary, 20 (occupation female servant), Margaret, 12? or 17? (dress maker), Sarah, 16 (female servant), Robert, 14 (apprentice cabinetmaker), John, 12, Ann, 7, William, 6.

Black Gate (named after Patrick Black) consisted of two towers with a passage running between them. Eventually houses were built along both sides of the passageway, and one part of the building became a public house. By the early part of the nineteenth century, the Castle Garth together with Black Gate comprised a tenement, housing up to sixty people.

In the 1851 census, William is 74, an "Out-Pensioner of Chelsea Hospital". This indicates that he had served in the military to gain this entitlement. A former soldier or non-commissioned officer (over 65 years of age) of the British Army or a former officer of the British Army who served in the ranks for at least 12 years or was awarded a disablement pension while serving in the ranks.^[4]

With him are wife Mary, 56, and children Sarah, 26, Robert T, 24 (brass founder), John J, 21 (brass founder), Ann, 18 and William, 16 (apprentice joiner).
