Mary was born in 1856. She died before our Dad (Lawrence) was even married so none of his ever saw our Grandma Gehring. She is from a family that has been here since the early 1600s and married a Swiss immigrant who she'd met while they were both at some teachers meetings in Elkader, IA. Her Dad liked having a big family around him. They stayed at his place near Big Springs close to Elkader. Their first child Elizabeth was also born here... Then her Dad lent them money to buy their farm closer to Elgin than Elkader in what was called the "Dutch Bottom" because the people on that side of the Turkey River spoke "Deutche"! In the Iowa marriage records for 1925 when her son Lawrence (our Dad) was getting married full names of all 4 parents are listed.  1860 Census -- Mary was 4
