Biography

Jeremiah Clark was born in 1795 in Smokey Creek, Burke County, North Carolina. His parents were John Clark and Nancy Spencer. [1]

"Mr. Clark (Jeremiah Gipson Clark) represents one of the old families of the mountain districts of Western North Carolina. His grandparents were Jeremiah and Mary (McCall) Clark, who spent all their lives in Watauga County, North Carolina. He married to Mary Ann McCall in Morganton, Burke County, NC on September 11, 1823. [2]

Their children were: Wilburn, John, Samuel, Marion, Robert, Jinsy, Eveline, Mary and Bettie. The daughter Jinsey married Harrison Aldridge, Eveline married Cain Lusk, Mary married George Bird and Bettie became the wife of Albert Brewer. There was a strong Union sentiment in this family, and the sons Samuel and Robert were both in the Union army, Robert losing his life in the service." [3]

Jeremiah Clark and wife Mary Ann McCall are also mentioned in another book. "Jeremiah Clark was born about 1795 to John and Nancy Clark. He grew up in their home along Smoky Creek in Burke County [North Carolina]. Jeremiah married Mary Ann McCall, daughter of John McCall. The McCall family appears in the chapter on Related Families. In the 1830s Jeremiah and Mary Ann Clark lived along the Johns River near present day Adako in Caldwell County [North Carolina]. Jeremiah and Mary Ann Clark raised eleven children. Their names were James Wilburn, Jesse, John Washington “Wesley,” Jane “Gincy” Emily, Mary, Frances Marion, Evaline, Levi, Louisa Elizabeth, Samuel C. and Robert Patterson Clark." [4]

Jeremiah and Mary Ann Clark lived in Watauga County, North Carolina in 1850. By this point in time, several of their children had left home. Data from their family Census record for 1850, Watauga County, North Carolina, 506/510 appears below.

  1. Jeremiah Clark 60 Farmer $300 N.C.
  2. Mary Ann 45
  3. Marion 17 male
  4. Evaline 14
  5. Levi 12

Jeremiah Clark and Mary Ann McCall are listed as parents of James Wilburn Clark. [6]

In 1860, the Federal Census reported that Jeremiah was 65 years old and living in the household of his oldest son, James Wilburn Clark and his wife Susannah Lusk Clark. Jeremiah's wife Mary Ann McCall Clark, age 55, was the head of the household next door. Samuel Lusk and his wife Mary "Polly" Townsend Lusk, parents of Susannah Lusk Clark, wife of James Wilburn Clark, lived two cabins away. [1] It is not clear why Jeremiah and Mary Clark were in seperate households but, given his age, he may have needed extra care.

In 1870, five years after the end of the American Civil War, the Federal Census reported that Jeremiah Clark was 76 years old and his wife Mary Ann McCall Clark was 65 years old and both were living in Buchanan County, Virginia. They were in the household of their son Samual Clark and his wife Lydia. [7]

In 1880, the Federal Census reported that Jeremiah Clark was 86 years old and living in Bakersfield, Mitchell County, North Carolina. His wife Mary Ann McCall Clark has not been found in a census and is presumed dead. Jeremiah is living in the household of George Byrd and wife Mary Clark Byrd, a daughter of Jeremiah. Their house is designated as the County Poor House and George Byrd is "Keeping the poor house" and his wife Mary is "Keeping house." Jeremiah Clark is listed as "Father in Law" to the head of the household, George Byrd. Several living in the Poor House are listed as "Paupers." [8]

Jeremiah died in 1881 in Bakersfield, Mitchell County, North Carolina.
