Biography

Susanna Clarke, daughter of Stephen Clarke and his wife Elizabeth (last name unknown), was baptized 11 January 1594/5[6?] at Theydon Garnon, Essex, England.[1][2]

Susannah married John Whipple on 28 August 1621 at St. Andrew by the Wardrobe, London.[1][3] They had eleven children: ten were born in Bocking, Essex, and five died there.[4]

  1. Susannah, eldest daughter, named in John Whipple's 1669 will;[4] born 1 July 1622, died 10 August 1692, married Lionel Worth[5]
  2. John, born 11 January 1623/4 and buried 4 August 1624 at Bocking[5]
  3. Capt. John, executor of John Whipple's 1669 will,[4] born 21 December 1625 in Bocking, baptized 25 December, married first Martha Raynor and second Elizabeth (Burr) Payne[5]
  4. Elizabeth, born 1 November 1627 in Bocking, died 15 December 1648 in Massachusetts, married Anothony Potter, they had no issue[5]
  5. Matthew, born 7 October 1628 and died 12 October 1634 in Bocking[5]
  6. William, born October 1631 in Bocking, died 4 June 1641 in Ipswich[4][5]
  7. Anne, born 2 June 1633 and died 4 May 1634 in Bocking[5]
  8. Mary, named in John Whipple's 1669 will,[4] born 20 February 1634 in Bocking, died 2 June 1720 in New England, married Simon Stone[5]
  9. Judith, born 4 August 1636 and died 27 June 1637 in Bocking[5]
  10. Matthew, born 17 February 1637/8 and died 30 March 1637/8 in Bocking[5]
  11. Sarah, youngest daughter, named in John Whipple's 1669 will, married Joseph Goodhue.[4] She was born 3 November 1641 in Ipswich, Massachusetts and died 23 July 1683[5]

The Whipple family arrived in Ipswich, Massachusetts, before 1 September 1638, when John was granted six acres of land there.[4]

Fiske (the most recent work on Susannah's family) does not give a date and place of death for Susannah.[1] Blaine Whipple's work states that Susannah died in Ipswich after 13 July 1661 and her husband remarried after April 1662.[4] This is the date found in Torrey's New England marriages.[6] However, Felt's History of Ipswich, cited by Blaine Whipple, states that John's wife "Sarah" died 14 June 1658.[7][8]

Her husband left a will dated 10 May 1669 and proved 28 September 1669. In it, he named three daughters (listed above), his "beloved wife" Jennett, son-in-law Anthony Potter and his son, John Whipple, was named executor.[4]

14 Jun 1658 is the date of death of Sarah, wife of Lieut John Whipple, a nephew of our Susannah's husband.

13 Jul 1661 happens to be the date of the agreement between John Whipple and William Goodhue upon the marriage of Joseph Goodhue and Sarah Whipple referred to in John Whipple's will in 1669 and also in Essex County Deeds v. 12 p. 52. I haven't found the agreement itself to see if it actually mentions the wife of John Whipple to prove that she is still alive at that date. If someone does locate it, please let me know. Clark-16692 and Clark-956 appear to represent the same person because: Both listed as wife of same man
