Death and Burial

Excerpts from a letter written by Dougal’s son Samuel (living in Ireland) to Samuel’s brother William John Clarke (living in America) dated April 5, 1869: “The Thursday before he died he was down in the field with me, where I was plowing And I heard no complaints with him, but h me took I’ll that night. And the next day Friday, he was poorly. On Saturday again he was some better and got up out of his bed and shaved himself, some better. On sabbath again poorly, but not one of us ever thought his end was so near. In Monday morning he thought he was some easier, but in the evening he began to sink fast. But he never talk death to himself to about 4 o’clock that evening and he died about 11 o’clock. Quite sensible to the end, and could speak on to the hindmost moment. He just slipped away, just worn out of old age.” Later in the same letter: “Father died the 4 of January. His funeral was one of the largest and most respectable funerals was in this part of the county for years.” Same letter: “..father was laid in the old and ancient burying ground of our family in Ray. We are the only family of our stock of Clarkes that is keeping to that ancient old place. The rest of our stock of people has buried all their dead in our Meeting House Green.”

Research notes

  • Dugald's son William John Clarke says he was Scots-Irish. Might be the reason it’s harder to trace Dougal’s ancestors.
