Biography

Laura Clarke was born in Charles Cottage, Old Kent Road, London in June 1842.

She married Richard Painter Esq. of Sydney, New South Wales. They married at All Saints Church, St Johns Wood, London.

In 1871 the family were living in the Strand, St Helen, Isle of Wight. The 1871 census details that her husband Richard (1827) was born in Pembrokeshire, and his means of income was stated as 'dividends'. The couple have a 7 year old son (1864) called Arnaud Clarke Painter who was born in Kent. They also have two daughters: Ethleen Nillie (4 1867), and Elsie M (2 1869), who were both born in Penge, Surrey.

In the 1891 census, the family are still living at the same address. Arnaud Clarke Painter has left the address by this time.

In the 1901 census, Laura is living in 45, Stanley Street, Portsmouth with her daughter Elsie. The census lists Laura as a widow by this point.

In the 1911 census, Laura and Elsie are living in 84 Ebury St SW, St George Hanover Square, London. They are lodgers at the address. The census details that Laura had 6 children, 5 of whom are alive at the time of the census.
