Biography

Catherine was born in Saskatchewan in 1888, the daughter of James E. Clarke and Mary J. Sanderson.[1][2][3] She was married to Lawrence Cook.[4] Following his death, a widow with two children, Lucille and Ben, she married Halver Nelson.[5]

Halver and Catherine farmed S.W. 15-45-24 and the hamlet of Waitville was built on their land.[6][7] The couple were active members of St. George's church, Waitville, and the land on which the church stands was donated by them. With their son Ben, they opened a store and operated it as Cook and Nelson General Store until the 1940s. The Nelsons' door was always open for travelers coming and going from the train.[8]

In 1953, they sold their farm and moved to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan,[9][10] where they enjoyed the Prince Albert Club and Holy Trinity Church.

In 1967, they moved with their daughter Phyllis and her husband to Edmonton. In the spring of 1971, they all moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, where Halver and Kate enjoyed the warm weather and abundance of fresh fruit. Aunt Kate, as she was known, spent many a night at a sick bedside whenever needed. Halver was known to welcome friend or stranger to their home and table.[8]

Catherine passed away in British Columbia in 1981 at the age of 93.[11] At her death they had 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
