) Clarke Genealogy; page 247: Laurence Clarke, called "Captain" Laurence Clarke, of Newport. He married Sarah Lawton, daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Lawton, b. 1679. Daniel Lawton, of Portsmouth, in his will, dated 6 Feb 1719 (proved 13 July 1719), gives "£10 to my daughter Sarah, wife of Laurence Clarke." He married (2nd), on 15 Nov 1733 at Newport, Sarah Freeborn of Portsmouth, and (3rd) 14 Aug 1740 at Newport Mary Burrington (or Budlington) of Portsmouth. He apparently had issue only by his first wife, viz:

) Clarke Genealogy; page 248:JOSEPH CLARKE, son of Laurence, of Newport, later of Middletown, R.I. Born at Newport 29 Sept 1713; married (1st), 18 Sept 1740 to Elizabeth Spooner (b. 1721, October 12; d. 1746, June 27); married (2d), 22 Feb 1749 to Phebe Negos. At date of second marriage he was of Middletown, R. I. He had issue, born at Newport:

) History of RI; page 309: "There lived at Newport, R. I., a Captain Laurence Clarke, who has been designated as belonging to one of Newport’s early seafaring families, but whom it seems probable was a son of Joseph Clarke (by his first wife) of Westhorpe, England, and Newport and Westerly, R. I. There is a deed in the old records in which Cary (Carew) Clark, of North Kingstown, son of Joseph, conveys land to his brother, Laurence, in February, 1726. Capt. Laurence Clarke married (first) Sarah Lawton, who was born in 1679, daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Lawton. He married (second) at Newport, Nov. 15, 1733, Sarah Freeborn, of Portsmouth, R. I. He married (third) Aug. 14, 1740, at Newport, Mary Burrington (or Buddington), of Portsmouth, R. 1. His issue apparently only by first wife were: Laurence, born in 1712; Abigail, died ( ?) He married (first) Sarah Lawton (b. 1679), daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Lawton. He married (second) 15 Nov 1733 Sarah Freeborn, of Portsmuth. Married (third) Mary Burrington (or Buddington) of Portsmuth. His children (all by first wife) were: Laurence, b. 1712; Joseph, b 29 Sept 1713 at Newport; Abigail; and Stephen, born in 1716.
