Obituary from the Ottawa Citizen, March 20, 2004:

Dufault E. Joan (nee Clarke) In Toronto on March 17, 2004, in her 85th year, of heart failure, after years of ill health. She spent her happy childhood years in Windsor and Toronto. Coming, on her mothers side, from a family of noted musicians, the 'musical Stones'; Ella, Victor, Fanny and Annie, Joan was both a versatile soprano and pianist. She won Ken Sobles Amateur Hour in Toronto at the age of sixteen and later won 'Singing Stars of Tomorrow'. She went on to have her own - live in those days - radio shows on CFRB ('Joan Clarke Sings') and the CBC. During World War II she sang many times for the troops in Toronto, under the auspices of the Red Cross, at Manning Pool, Christie Street Hospital and Chorley Park. Later, after marrying George in 1945 she sang in Ottawa on stations CFRA and the CBC, winning 'Opportunity Knocks' in 1947. The Dufault family lived in the Kitchener-Waterloo area from 1957 until George's death in 1980. During that time she and George restored a dilapidated farmhouse to its former glory. She was the cherished younger daughter of Ella (nee Stone) and Ernest Clarke, the loved wife of Professor George Dufault and dear sister of Frances Davis, all of whom predeceased her. She leaves her much loved sons Michael in Toronto and Christopher in Ottawa, and Christopher's wife Heather and their daughter Sophie. The funeral will take place at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. A reception at the funeral home and interment at Mount Hope Cemetery will follow. Donations to the Salvation Army would be greatly appreciated. [1]
