Biography

Birth & Baptism

Jeney or Janey, later know simply as Jane, the daughter of Sarah Clark and an unknown father (see Research Notes below), was born on 3rd February 1792 at Sutton, Cheshire.[1][2][3][4][5] She was baptised at St Michael's church, Macclesfield on 23 March 1792.[6]

Marriage

Janey (18) married James Orme (18) (born in 1791 in Rainow, Cheshire, England; son of William Orme and Mary (Gaskell) Orme) on 22 Apr 1810, at St Peter's, the parish church of Prestbury.[7]

Their children were:

  1. Mary Ann Orme (<1811– ) .
  2. Sarah Orme (<1813–1827) .
  3. Peter Orme (<1815– ) .
  4. Alice Orme (1817–1824) .
  5. Elizabeth Orme (<1819– ) .
  6. Samuel Orme (<1821–1824) .
  7. Martha Orme (<1824–1840) .
  8. Rebecca Orme (1826–1893) .
  9. Ann Orme (1829–1849) .
  10. James Orme (~1831–<1851) .
  11. Joseph Orme (<1836– ) .
  12. Aaron Orme (1839–1907)

Janey's husband, James), passed away in 1848.

Later Life

At the time of the 1851 Census, Jane (aged 59 years) was at Stone House Green, Sutton, Cheshire with 3 of her children, James, Joseph and Aaron.[3]

Jane was still at Stone House Green in 1861. Joseph and Aaron remained at home.[4]

In 1871, Jane was at Kinsey Street, Congleton, Cheshire. Son Aaron and his wife, Sarah (Duncalf) Orme (abt.1845-1881), were there also.[5]

Residence

Jane move back and forth between the Macclesfield, Cheshire area (Rainow, Sutton, Prestbury) and Congleton, Cheshire or Astbury (just south of Congleton and within the Congleton registration district). By 1851, Jane (widowed) was back at Sutton. Her last years were in Congleton.

Death

Jane died at Kinsey Street, Congleton, on 29 January 1875.[1]

Research Notes

  • There are variations of both Janey's first name and birth surname. Although the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses record the her name as "Jane", the death certificate has "Janey" and the parish baptism record has "Jeney" (probably a transcription error - no image can be found). Whilst the baptism record has "Clarke" the parish marriage record omits the "e". Chris Orme 6 September 2018.
  • The probable baptism record for Janey[6] is a little difficult to read but seems to be, "Jeney, dr of Sarah Clark Ileget". The abbreviated word at the end probably stands for "illegitimate". To date no records have been found with any details of the father. Chris Orme 22 July 2021
