Catherine/Katharine Clarke was born 1 May 1669 in Newport, Rhode Island to Walter Clarke and Hannah Scott Clarke. She was a Quaker.

She married twice: first, about 1695-1696, in Newport, to Captain James Gould, son of Daniel and Wait Coggeshall Gould; and second, to Nathaniel Sheffield, son of Ichabod Sheffield and Mary Parker Sheffield. Katherine and Nathaniel did not have any children together.

Catherine and James Gould had two sons born in Newport: James, born in 1696, and Walter, born in 1698.

Her father, Walter Clarke, former Governor, conveyed in 1698 a "tenement of houses and slaughter house" to son-in-law James Gould and Katharine, his wife, his lawful daughter.

When Nathaniel Sheffield died in 1729, he had a will in which he left wife Katherine land that was given to her, and her first husband, by her father Walter Clarke.

"Sheffield, Katharine, widow of Nathaniel, formerly wife of James Gould, daughter of Walter and Hannah Clarke, died at her son James Gould's, Jan. 25, 1752, Clifton graveyard."

Her headstone (carved by William Stevens) reads:

IN MEMORY of | Katherine Sheffield | who died Jany 25 | A.D. 1752 in ye 83d | Year of her Age.

And now for Rest she has Flown, No Tongue could tell her Troubl's But her Own.
