Biography

Anna was born in 1850. Anna Clarke ... She passed away in 1911.

Have not found information about her origin yet; census notes father's birthplace as Virginia, Mother's as Louisiana.

May be the same Anna Clarke that appears in orphanages in 1860 and 1870.

Wide variations in age in all records.

Prospere returned from Mexico in March of 1867. He is listed in New Orleans city directory of 1868.

Unable to find marriage record online. Could Anna and Prospere have met outside of New Orleans?

Anna and Prospere's first child, Flora, was born in 1871.

Anna and Prospere's second child, George, was born in 1874. Per George's marriage license, he was born in Lafourche Crossing, Louisiana. At his death in 1958, his son stated that he had lived in New Orleans for the past 80 years.

Birth records for both Flora and George were recorded at the Raceland Church in Lafourche Parish.

It appears likely that Anna and Prosper likely lived in Lafourche, or at least outside of New Orleans, including in Lafourche, from ~1871-1878. Have not reconciled the recording of Flora's birth in 1871 at Raceland vs the city directories showing Propere in New Orleans through 1873.

1880 Census lived on Belleville St. in Algiers (perhaps 496 Belleville?) Anna's age is given as 30 (b. 1850) with Father from Virginia, Mother Louisiana.

1888, husband Prospere dies. No information about Anna in obituary.

1900 Census: Anna lived at 2715 Annunciation St., New Orleans with son George. Birthdate January 1860, Widowed, crossed out "20" under number of years married - could this mean she was married from 1868-1888? Listed as "Boarding House Keeper," and had one boarder in house. Father from Virginia, Mother Louisiana.

1910 Census: Anna at 929 Dante St., New Orleans. 49 years old (~1860.) Widowed. States she had 3 children, with 3 living. If this is correct, I have no record of #3.

Death certificate says native of Louisiana. Aged 50 years. "Departed this life yesterday (14 Aug 1911) at the Charity Hospital in ?ser."

"Cause of Death: ?Ceb ? Int? ??pht (perhaps Interstitial Nephritis)

Searched August 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 Times-Picayune obits with no success.

Times-Democrat Obit 15 Aug 1911, page 2:

"On Monday Aug. 14, 1911 at 9:15 o'clock pm ANNA JANE CLARKE, widow of Prosper Frilot. Her funeral will take place on Wednesday morning, Aug. 16th, at 10 o'clock, from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. N.L. Marks, 3320 Palmyra street."

Have not been able to find a succession - there is an Anna Clarke, but dates are not right. There is also a court record for Anna Clarke, matter of minor (emancipation) but it is from the 1870s.

Do not know where she or Prospere were buried.

No information about her or Prospere on death certificate for George.

Flora's death certificate gives Anna Clarke, birthplace Virginia as mother.
