Biography

Ellen Susannah Clarke was born in Haggerstone, West Shoreditch, London, England on 7 May 1849 to John Samuel Clarke and Suzanna Peers[1] and Baptised on 8 July 1849 at City Road Congregational Chapel[2].

She came to New Zealand on the "St. Leonards" arriving at Lyttleton on 23 September 1872[3] with family members Emily Clarke aged 40, John Clarke Aged 23, Mercy Jane Clarke aged 17 and Emily Clarke aged 13.

She married Ernest James Drummond on 2 July 1875[4] at Mathesons Road, Linwood, Christchurch, New Zealand and had seven children with Him,

  2. Aleck James Drummond
  3. Emma Goldsmith Drummond
  4. Leonard Clarke Drummond
  5. Ina Louisa Drummond
  6. Claude Peers Drummond
  7. Eva Mary Olney Drummond

She is listed in Electoral rolls Living in Riwaka in 1899 and 1902, Various addresses in Jackson street, Petone From 1905 to 1922 then moving to 3 Tory Street, Petone from 1922 to 1928[5].

She died on 4 January 1930 in Petone, New Zealand[6]. She was buried in Taita Cemetery (old section)[7] with her husband buried next to her.
