Biography

Jonas' name on his birth certificate is Jonas Todd. No father is listed; his mother is Barbara Clarkson.^[1] In the baptism ledger of Kildwick Parish his name is Jonas Todd; beneath his name is "illegitimate son of". In the space for his mother is Barbara Clarkson with the notation "now the wife of William Todd". Baptism date was June 9, 1839.^[2] William and Barbara were married 16 February 1839, 38 days after Jonas was born. The way the baptism entry is made, it's hard to tell if his name was Jonas Clarkson or Jonas Clarkson Todd.

Census 1851: age 12, worsted spinner, Starkey Lane, Kildwich [sic], Skipton District.^[3]

Census 1861: age 22, labourer, Starkey Lane, Farnhill, Yorkshire. Household includes: William 44, Barbara 42, Jonas 22, Susannah 20, John 17, Agnes 16, Emily 3.^[4]
