Granny (Gladys) told several stories about her father and how mean he was. He was angry because she wore out her shoes. So, he bought her combat type boots to wear to school. To avoid embarrassment, she wore the shoes each morning and went to a neighbors house and changed her shoes to go to school. Then changed her shoes again after school. One of my mother's cousins confirmed this story.
