Sarah was the daughter of William Clarkson and Sarah Nicholson. She was born in Petone, Wellington, NZ, in the spring of 1846.
Sarah moved south to Lyttelton with her parents sometime in 1849, which meant the Clarkson family were on hand to greet the first four ships of the Canterbury settlement when they berthed the following year.
Sarah married John Carson, a Mariner, in Lyttelton in 1863, and they lived in Lyttelton, producing 12 children over 25 years. Mary Ann was only 17 at the time she married, and is marked as a minor on the marriage record. Present at the wedding were:
Sarah and Jack had 12 children over the first 25 years of their marriage. Five years after thier youngest was born, Sarah suffered a brain haemorrhage at her Brenchley Rd home in Lyttelton. She died soon after, in the autumn of 1889, at only 42 years of age.[2]
Sarah's funeral service was held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Lyttelton, and she was buried in the Anglican Cemetery there on 23 May 1889.[3] Her grave site now contains the memorial plaque to all the descendants of her parents, William and Sarah Clarkson.
Funeral Notice:
"The Friends of William John Carson are respectfully informed that the funeral of his late Wife, Mary Ann, will leave his residence, Brenchley road, Lyttelton, To-morrow, Thursday, at 3.30 p.m., for the Church of England Cemetery."[4]
