Frederick William Daniel Claus was born about 1855 in Buffalo, New York, United States. He was the son of Jacob Claus and Helena Herschler. ^{[1] [2]}

At the age of 16, Daniel appeared in the 1871 Canadian Census with his parents in Bertie Township. ^[1]

He married Kathy M Kranz on 9 Mar 1876 in Welland, Ontario, Canada. ^{[2] [3]}

His brother Frederick William has a very similar name. However they both appear in the 1871 census as Daniel age 16 and Frederick age 8. Sources could be mixed up between the two of them because their names are so similar.
