James Lee Clarkson was born in ~1775 in Russell County, Virginia.

James married Sarah Hellom Cook (1775 - 1863) on October 10, 1799 in Russell County.[1]

Their children were...

  1. Henry Claxton (~1790 - >1790)
  2. Mary Polly Claxton (~1790 - >1790)
  3. Mahala (Clarkson) Hurst (~1797 - 1850)
  4. Fairwick Clarkson Clarkson (~1800 - 1874)
  5. Mahala (Claxton) Hurst (1801 - 1892).

James was a road surveyor for Russell County Virginia as early as 1800. He moved with his wife Sarah to the Hancock / Claiborne County Tennessee area before 1805.

Military Service

James served and died in the War of 1812 on February 11, 1815 while stationed at Fort Decatur, Alabama. He served under the command of Colonel William Johnson’s and Colonel Edwin Booth’s Regiments, which defended the lower section of the Mississippi Territory, particularly the vicinity of Mobile. They protected the region from any possible Redstick Creek Indian incursions and a possible British invasion. These regiments were all under the overall command of Major General William Carroll and General Andrew Jackson. They manned the various forts that were located throughout the territory: Fort Claiborne, Fort Decatur, and Fort Montgomery, for example. Sickness was rampant in this regiment and the desertion rate was high. The regiment mustered in at Knoxville and was dismissed at Mobile.

James died on February 11, 1815 in Fort Decatur, Alabama aged ~39.
