Ann Clay was born in about 1839 in Great Hale, Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of Walter Clay and his wife, Elizabeth.

Charles Stow (24) son of James Stow married Ann Clay (27), daughter of Walter Clay on 19th April 1866 in Swineshead, Lincolnshire, England.

This was a very short marriage, as Ann (32) is a widow on the 1871 census, when she and a daughter, Clara Clay Stow are living with Ann's widower father, Walter (60). Ann's sister, Eliza Ablard (26), her husband Timothy J Ablard (28) and their daughter, Florence J Ablard (1) are also living with him.
