Biography

Lily (Clayton) Steele was born in Lancashire, England.

Lily was born in Everton, (Liverpool), Lancashire, England, on April 27, 1887. She was the daughter of William James Clayton and Catherine Simnor, and appears to be one of six children. Lily was enumerated in the 1891 census residing with her family in Walton on the Hill, Lancashire. Lily's father passed away in 1896. Her mother moved from Lancashire, and Lily was enumerated in the 1901 census residing in Luddenden Foot, Yorkshire. Lily remained with her mother until her marriage in 1914. She is enumerated in the 1911 census residing in Halifax, West Riding.

Lily married John Steele on May 30, 1914, in Halifax, at Saint John the Baptist. According to the parish register, Lily was a twenty six year old spinster, no occupation listed, residing at Thompson Terrace, King Cross, Halifax. Her father was named as William James, "Plumber". John was listed as a twenty one year old bachelor and "Gas Fitter" residing at Thompson Terrace, King Cross, Halifax. His father was named as Benjamin Steel, "Foreman Mason". The witnesses were Harry and Gertrude Ashworth. It is unknown if the couple had any children. They are enumerated in the 1939 Register residing in Halifax, no children at residence.

Lily passed away on August 20, 1961, in Halifax. She was buried (or cremated) on August 24, 1961 (cemetery unknown). Lily was seventy four.
