Biography
John Clayton was born in England.
JOHN CLAYTON, of Thelwall and Sheepcroft, gent. On 14 February, 33 Henry VIII. [1542-3,] he had a grant from the king of lands in Thelwall, formerly belonging to the dissolved monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul, Salop. He sold his estates in Thelwall to Richard Brooke, of Norton, and afterwards resided on his estate at Sheepcroft. He was buried at Grappenhall, 21 Nov., 1597, as "John Clayton of Sheepcroft, gent." His wife ......... daughter of James Clive, of Huxley, co. Chester, was buried at Grappenhall, 4 May, 1632, as " Mrs Cleaton of " Sheepcroft, rid." They had at least 4 children.[1]
