He served in the US Army during WWII and received these decorations and citations: Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation with one Bronze Battle Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. He was active in the Salem Knobbers and Mammoth Springers Square Dance clubs.
