William Claytor is Notable.

William Schieffelin Claytor was a mathematician who specialized in topology. He was the first African-American to be published in a mathematical research journal, and only the third African-American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics.[1]

William was born in 1908. He was the son of dentist Dr. William Claytor and his wife Simsie Thorne.

William obtained a Masters from Howard University in 1929, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1933.[1]

William served in the U.S. Army during World War II, teaching at Anti-Aircraft Artillery Schools in Virginia and Georgia. [2][1] Afterwards he joined the faculty at Howard University, eventually serving chair of the Mathematics Department.

Williams married Mae Belle Pullins, a psychologist, in 1947 in Manhattan, New York.[3]

The National Association of Mathematicians (NAM) has a lecture series named after William.[1]

He passed away in 1967 and was buried in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.[4]
