Biography

Samuel Claytor was born October 26, 1830 . He died March 31, 1894. He married Abie (Abbey) Hartley in Pike County, Ohio, on May 20, 1855. During the Civil War, Samuel Claytor served in the 111th Illinois as a regimental teamster. (according the an existent letter written by him to his wife from an encampment at Columbus, Kentucky on Dec 14, 1862). Samuel Claytor entered the Union Army on September 18, 1862 at Salem, Illinois. He saw action at Chattanooga, Tennessee and Decatur, Georgia with the 16th Army Corps. The 111th Illinois was part of General Sherman's command during the March to the Sea. The unit saw action at Huntsville, Alabama, Kennesaw Mountain, the Atlanta campaign, and through South Carolina. Samuel Claytor was wounded at the Battle of Resaca, north of Atlanta. While he recovered enough to return to active service the wound did not completely heal for the remainder of his life, He participated in the Grand Review of the Grand Army of the Republic in Washington D.C. and mustered out of the Army after the Grand Review on June 6, 1865. Samuel Claytor and his brother, James, were mustered out on the same day. The 111th saw action in 7 battles, 9 skirmishes, and suffered 148 men wounded and 42 men killed.
