Biography

This profile is part of the Clezie  Name Study.

Mary was born at Eyemouth about 1827, the exact date unknown. Her father is unknown; her mother was Margaret Clazie who was unmarried at the time but later married Peter Swanston. The child Mary was therefore raised by her grandparents John Clazie and Margaret Gray.

Mary's second name is variously written Sheriff, Sherriff, Shiref, Shirreff and even Sherry. It was an ancestral name, probably from Margaret Sheriff, wife of Peter Mack. Mary's exact relationship to them hasn't been found - but several marriages are known to have involved the Clazie, Sheriff, Mack, Purves, Laurie, Drummond families, commonly found on both sides of the Border between Scotland and England. The origin of Mary's third name, Edwards, hasn't yet been found.

Mary Sheriff Edwards Clazie married Peter Drummond in 1850 (It is possible they may have married at home rather than Paxton Toll or any of the Tolls for that matter and it didn’t make it into the register). There was no legal requirement for marriages to be recorded until 1855. They had 9 children. They were farm workers, following the work from place to place in Berwickshire.

The 1851 UK census showed them at Chirnside; 1861 at Edrom. The 1871 census showed them at Fogo and said Mary was born at "Egremond, Berwick" - a misreading "Eyemouth" likely due to someone's bad handwriting!

The 1881 and 1891 UK censuses showed this family at Preston Farm, near Bunkle, Berwickshire. Mary died in August 1891 at Preston Farm, age just 64. Her death certificate said the cause of death was "general decay".

Clazie-145 and Clazie-228 appear to represent the same person because: OK, Paul, here they are, side-by-side.

It says I'm not on the "trusted list", so I can't merge them. I can only mark them as a "proposed merge". Up to you to to complete the merge.
