Biography

This profile is part of the Clezie  Name Study.

William was born in April 1858 at Whitsome, Berwickshire. He was the son of Robert Clazie and Christina Laurie. He was listed in the 1861 census at Kimmerghame Mains Farm Cottages, near Edrom;1871 at Coldstream; 1881 at Chirnside, all in Berwickshire, now part of the Scottish Borders.

William married Margaret Chirnside in 1896 but she died less than a year later, giving birth to their son Robert. 1901 census at Berwick-upon-Tweed showed William was a widower, a farm servant, living with son Robert. The census incorrectly shows William was born in 1861 and was age 40; he was really 42.

William remarried in 1902 to Eleanor Crawford and they had 7 children together. They moved to Glendale, Northumberland, shown in the 1911 census. But the census mistakenly shows his birthplace as "Whitson Hill, Whitson, Northumberland."

William passed away in 1939 at Coldstream. He was buried at Lennel Kirkyard where an inscription says:

In loving memory of my dear husband WILLIAM CLAZIE 1858-1939. Also son Pte ROBT CLAZIE Machine Gun Corps who died in France 1918. Also wife ELEANOR CRAWFORD 1870-1953.
