Patrick Cleary, born at Bohehs, Islandeady and baptised on the 4th of October, 1859 in Islandeady Church, Mayo. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary (Irish Police Force) in 1879 (number 44963) and was posted first to County Clare in 1880 and after a number of years to County Kerry in November 1889, where he was stationed at Listowel. According to the RIC records he was 5'10 in height. While stationed in Clare he went on an excursion to Kilkee, a West of Ireland holiday resort with a friend on the West Clare Railway, and finally by horse-car. His friend, Bill Fagan, introduced him to an acquaintance, Mary Elizabeth (Anastasia) Cusack, whom he married in Kilkee Church on the 9th of September 1889. Promoted the rank of Sergeant in 1900 he won various medals in the service and retired in 1909. On his retirement he moved to Dublin for a time, before settling in Limerick City in Spellissey Square, where he died on 21st January 1924. Mary Elizabeth died on the 5th of June 1935 aged 68.
