Biography

Laurence or Lawrence was born about 1853-1856 or 1863, one of at least 7 children of William Cleary and Anastasia Byrne born between 1852 and 1868. No baptism or birth registration record for Laurence has as yet been identified (June 2021).

The 1901 census for Wexford lists: Laurence OCleary 46 yrs old, born county Wexford, carpenter, wife Marrinnie, 36 yrs, Elizabeth 9 yr, Mary 7 yrs, William 5 yr, Teresa 4 yrs, James 3 yrs, John 1 yr, resided in 1901 in household of his father-in-law William Kelly 56 yrs, farmer and publican house 11 in Templetown (Templetown, Wexford)^[1]

The 1911 census for Wexford lists: Residents of a house 16 in Templetown (Templetown, Wexford) William Kelly (Laurence's father-in-law) age 69, publican. Laurence Cleary 53 years carpenter; Marianne Cleary 44 years (wife) and their children James 13, John 11, Catherine 10, Patrick 8, Francis 5. Census entry states married 21 years and 15 children (8 living). ^[2]

Lawrence Cleary, 65 yrs old, married, publican died 31 Aug 1925 in Templetown, daughter Katherine Cleary present at death. ^[3]

His marriage at Templetown to Maria Anna (Mary Anne) Kelly was on 21 November 1889. The Civil record entry has his first name spelt as 'Lawrence'. He was a carpenter living at Booley in 1889, and his father (deceased) was a farmer. Mary Anne was from Templetown, and her father was a publican. Witnesses at the marriage were John Kennedy and Mary Walsh.

At time of his death on 31 August 1925, he is listed as living at Templetown and a publican.
