Family tradtion is that Peter Cleary was born in approximately 1770, possibly in Gort in County Galway, Ireland. With his brothers, he relocated to the townland of Illaun near Miltown Malbay in County Clare. No documents verifying birth details or the fraternal relationship have been found, but the strong family tradition and the fact that they settled on adjacent plots of land is probably sufficient evidence of a close relationship.
In the Tithe Appointment Books for the old Civil Parish of Kilfarboy (Miltown Malbay), dated 1825, the Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre identified three Cleary holdings at Illaun : Thomas Cleary, Peter Cleary and John Cleary.
Peter Cleary who was shown as holding 4 acres of first quality land, 9.75 acres of second quality land, 4 acres of third quality land and 2 acres of 4th quality land which brought his total holding to 19.75 acres.
Local genealogy enthusiast, the late Donal Garrihy,,[1] identified Peter Cleary who was living at Illaun in 1825 as the father of Martin Cleary (born 1821) but no documentary evidence has been located.
Nothing else is known of Peter but it is presumed that he spent the remainder of his life in Illaun, Miltown Malbay and would have died there.
