Biography

Samuel was born on 17 May 1704 in Woburn, Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. He was the son of Aaron Cleaveland II and Abigail (Waters) Cleaveland.

From Geneaology of Cleaveland and Cleveland Families Vol. 1 Considering his (Samuel) early life William wrote:

In Boston he was impressed on a British Man of War, which after making one cruise returned to Boston. The captain was dining with a family in some way connected with ours, when the lady of the house told him she had a favor to ask of him. He replied that if it was in his power he would grant it with pleasure. She told him it was to release Sam. Cleaveland. He said he would rather part with any two men on board, but as he had given his word, Sam. should be discharged. The ship was lying in King Road (now President Road) and Sam. was sent up in a boat with a coxswain and six men all of whom abused him on the way. As soon as he landed on the wharf he challenged any two of them to fight, when they all came upon him he flogged them handsomely.

Event: 1749 in Arrival.[1]

Samuel died at the age of 49 on 17 May 1753 in East Jeddore, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Capt. Samuel Cleveland, was in Nova Scotia periodically with his brother Joshiah. He was killed by natives at Jeddore on the southeast shore of Nova Scotia in 1753. Samuel & his brother Josiah came to Nova Scotia with Edward Cornwallis in 1749 to assist Cornwallis in establishing Hailfax. While "performing service for the (colonial) government", the boat which was captained (and partly owned) by Samuel was attacked by Indians at Jeddore on May 17, 1753. He and several others were killed and the boat was burned. The Nova Scotia Council granted his wife, Sarazh, 25 pounds as her share of the damages (probably for the boat, not for Samuel). She then married John Fillis of Holifax. PRIN MH:I387

Cleaveland-52 and Cleveland-759 appear to represent the same person because: identical data, alternate spelling of name needs a primary source
